چکیده

1 With the standard electroweak interactions, the lowest-order coherent forward scattering amplitudes of neutrinos in a CP symmetric medium (such as the early universe) are zero, and the index of refraction of a propagating neutrino can only arise from the expansion of gauge boson propagators, from radiative corrections, and from new physics interactions. Motivated by nucleosynthesis constraints on a possible sterile neutrino (suggested by the solar neutrino deficit and a possible 17 keV neutrino), we calculate the standard model contributions to the neutrino index of refraction in the early universe, focusing on the period when the temperature was of the order of a few MeV. We find sizable radiative corrections to the tree level result obtained by the expansion of the gauge boson propaga-family mixing (if any), effects from different family scattering can be dominated by radiative corrections. The result for ν + γ → ν + γ is zero at one-loop level, even if neutrinos are massive. The cancellation of infrared divergence in a coherent process is also discussed.

Neutrino Self-Energy and Index of Refraction in Strong Magnetic Field: A New Approach

The Ritus’ Ep eigenfunction method is extended to the case of spin-1 charged particles in a constant electromagnetic field and used to calculate the one-loop neutrino self-energy in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Using the obtained self-energy, the neutrino dispersion relation and index of refraction in the magnetized vacuum are determined for the field range me ≪ eB ≪ M W . The propa...

Neutrino flavor conversion in a neutrino background : single - versus multi - particle description

In the early Universe, or near a supernova core, neutrino flavor evolution may be affected by coherent neutrino-neutrino scattering. We develop a microscopic picture of this phenomenon. We show that coherent scattering does not lead to the formation of entangled states in the neutrino ensemble and therefore the evolution of the system can always be described by a set of one-particle equations. ...

A meshless discrete Galerkin method for solving the universe evolution differential equations based on the moving least squares approximation

In terms of observational data, there are some problems in the standard Big Bang cosmological model. Inflation era, early accelerated phase of the evolution of the universe, can successfully solve these problems. The inflation epoch can be explained by scalar inflaton field. The evolution of this field is presented by a non-linear differential equation. This equation is considered in FLRW model...

Limits on neutrino-neutrino scattering in the early Universe

In the standard model neutrinos are assumed to have streamed across the Universe since they last scattered when the standard-model plasma temperature was ∼MeV. The shear stress of free-streaming neutrinos imprints itself gravitationally on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and makes the CMB a sensitive probe of neutrino scattering. Yet, the presence of nonstandard physics in the neutrino se...

Neutrino oscillations in the early universe : How large lepton asymmetry can be generated ?

The lepton asymmetry that could be generated in the early universe through oscillations of active to sterile neutrinos is calculated (almost) analytically for small mixing angles, sin2θ < 10 −2. It is shown that for a mass squared difference , δm 2 = −1 eV 2 it may rise at most by 6 orders of magnitude from the initial " normal " value ∼ 10 −10 , since the back-reaction from the refraction inde...
